Future Oceans 3: Advancing Marine Research and Collaboration in Shanghai

From May 13 to 16, 2025, the IMBeR Synthesis and Future Planning Conference (Future Oceans 3) took place in Shanghai, hosted by East China Normal University. The event was a resounding success, with 306 participants from 129 institutions spanning 28 countries and regions coming together both in-person and virtually. The diverse attendees included esteemed scholars, strategic experts, representatives from international organizations, budding researchers, and stakeholders specializing in marine science, climate change, ecological conservation, and related fields.

Professor Kenneth Leung, the Director of the Global Estuaries Monitoring (GEM) Programme, actively participated in the symposium. During the conference, Professor Leung introduced the GEM initiative at the "IMBeR strategic partnership: Recognizing interfaces and building synergies with relevant projects and UN Ocean Decade Programme" Session. Through discussions at a strategic partnership roundtable forum, Prof. Leung assumed a pivotal role as a member of the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) within the UNESCO-IOC Scientific Community on Ocean Research (SCOR).
