GEM Webinar One Highlights Data Sharing in the Ocean Decade and the Impact of Pharmaceuticals on Atlantic Salmon Migration

The Global Estuaries Monitoring (GEM) Programme successfully hosted its inaugural GEM webinar on September 19, 2025. The event featured two distinguished speakers who shared valuable insights into their research endeavors.

Dr. Adam Leadbetter captivated the audience with his discussion on enhancing data sharing in the Ocean Decade. He stressed the necessity for researchers to establish a robust data-sharing framework and network, enabling the effective utilization of research data. Dr. Leadbetter underscored the significance of data openness in advancing scientific knowledge, outlining actionable steps to realize this objective.

In a thought-provoking presentation, Prof. Michael Bertram shed light on his team's collaborative research on pharmaceutical pollution's impact on river-to-sea migration in Atlantic salmon. This crucial topic delves into the behavioral changes in animals due to emerging pollutants, serving as a vital indicator of pollutant effects on ecosystems. Prof. Bertram also shared his insights on publishing in prestigious journals like Science.

The engaging talks by both speakers sparked lively discussions among the attendees, culminating in the success of the first GEM Webinar, which saw a turnout of over 30 participants.


Looking ahead, GEM is set to host a second webinar later this year, aiming to foster knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement within and beyond the GEM Network. Anticipation is high for the upcoming event as we continue to promote collaborative learning and engagement.
